Resurrection of the sea pen genus Ptilella Gray, 1870 and description of Ptilella grayi n. sp. from the NE Atlantic (Octocorallia: Pennatulacea)

    Get PDF
The order Pennatulacea covers a group of specialized and morphologically distinct octocorals found in all oceans from intertidal areas to more than 6000 m in depth. Sea pens constitute an important structural component in marine soft-bottom communities by increasing the complexity of these environments. Despite being both morphologically distinctive and ecologically important, the taxonomy and systematics of sea pens is still poorly understood. Recent molecular studies have shown the existence of convergent morphological features, making the current familial distribution of genera unstable. The genus Pennatula Linnaeus, 1758 was one of the first described octocoral genera. It is the type genus of its family, Pennatulidae. Colonies of this genus have a characteristic morphology. Recent sampling efforts in the northeastern Atlantic have provided a number of colonies initially attributable to the genus Pennatula. Both morphological and molecular (mtMutS, Cox1 and 28S genes) study of this material supports the polyphyletic nature of this genus and the need to resurrect the genus Ptilella Gray, 1870 to accommodate these and other species. A new species, Ptilella grayi n. sp., is described and illustrated. The species Pennatula bayeri is proposed to be a junior synonym of Pennatula bellissima (here also considered in the genus Ptilella)

12 páginas, 4 figuras.-- Trabajo presentado al 4rd Iberian Grid Infrastructure Conference celebrado en Braga (Portugal) del 24 al 27 de mayo de 2010.Nowadays virtualization has become a commonly adopted so- lution within modern datacenters. Its advantages over traditional machines are widely known. In this paper we describe the work done at the IFCA facilities to implement an auto healing mechanism to a given set of Virtual Machines (VMs) by using disk mirroring over network. The resulting system is a secure, robust and fast failover mechanism that is able to perform an unattended commute of the execution host of a given set of VMs in case of any failure.Peer reviewe

The Risk Assessment Scales are an Efficient Tool in the Prevention of Pressure Ulcers in Hospitalized Neonates.

    Get PDF
In the last decade, the increase of new health technologies in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) -adapted from technological advances in adults- has led a significant increase in survival and prognosis of some neonates diseases with high-risk situations (premature) and critical conditions (respiratory distress). Some health technologies (mechanical ventilation, hemodiafiltration, Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation-ECMO) require that the infant remains sedated and maintain prolonged immobility. This situation favouring the occurrence of Pressure Ulcers (PU) in hospitalized neonates. In Spain in neonatal units the prevalence rates are from 50% in NICU, and 12.5% in hospitalization [1-3]. Epidemiological studies in neonates are scarce and usually with little sample

    Get PDF

Fatigue strain fields comparison between Synchrotron X-Ray Diffraction and 3D Numerical computation in a bainitic steel.

Engineers prioritize resource preservation when designing lightweight materials, but fatigue can pose challenges. Although various experimental methods exist for studying fatigue cracks, some are only effective for transparent materials. For example, transmission photo-elasticity is limited in application, and post-failure metallography and micro-indentation cannot be adopted during mechanical testing. However, Synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments can obtain valuable data from the bulk of metallic materials. A study was done on a 12mm thick Compact Tension bainitic steel sample (used in civil engineering and Wind offshore industry). A fatigue test was conducted by applying 51,000 loading cycles at a frequency of 10 Hz, ΔP=14.9KN (0.5kN to 15.4kN), followed by a 24.5 kN load. We analyzed the strain fields along the crack growth direction (εxx) and loading direction (εyy). Both experimental and Finite Element Methods data showed promising results with similar strain field shapes and values, showing as well consistency with mode I loading.Authors are grateful for the beam time granted by the ESRF (MA1483). In this paper, we present some of the results of the R&D Project called "Ecologies of learning in multiple contexts: analysis of expanded education projects and citizenship configurations" funded by Minister of Economy and Competitiveness (Spain). The interest of this project arises after considering that much of the individual and organizational learnings have been turning invisible in different educational spaces. Therefore, our purpose is to study the different socio-educational mechanisms that individuals and organizations put into play in different scenarios: schools, asociations, virtual academical contexts, etc. On this ocassion, we present some of the methodological issues and results of a specific case: "La Universidad Rural Paulo Freire de la Serranía de Ronda" (onwards URPF), a rural socio-educative organization. The ethnography is being developed in Benalauría (Ronda mountain range). This organization is focused in the recovery of traditional learnings that people used to have around the rural world. It is settled in a critical perspective that connects their educational actions under the approaches of sustainability, dignity, feminism, etc. The general objectives we consider for this project are the following: - To know life style of people in Benalauría context. - To understand the configuration of URPF group and its impact in the territory. - To promote learning communities of practice with other organizations. As specific objectives, we emphasize: - To review the conceptual frameworks those allow us to understand the practices of invisible learning in this experience. - To generate visual narratives those evidence the work and identity features of the URPF. - To analyse the life stories of the people who are part of this experience (as well as the collective story), for the understanding of socio-educational action in rural contexts through dialogue of knowledge, generation of democratic practices and collaborative participation. - To generate spaces for dialogue with other organizations, groups and people for the creation of networks and learning communities.

    Get PDF
